A new personal project from Janyon

"I'm not going to go into detail on how I managed to catch a glimpse of myself whilst being upside down (some things should just stay mysterious) but I noticed it wasn't a good look. It gave me the idea of shooting a portrait series in which the subjects were in this not so comfortable predicament, which is kinda opposite to the whole "relax and look natural" conventional portrait execution. I wanted the images to look like regular portraits though, but somehow wrong.

Mark, one of the Contacts producers, rained on my parade when he told me it had been done by some guy in the US. I chose to ignore that and went ahead anyway.

Casting was a slow process as people I approached were surprisingly reluctant to be photographed in a stress-position. Its not exactly going to flatter, but I finally recruited some candidates, keeping in mind that their fitness level would need to accommodate some basic trapeze moves.

The shoot was done with the supervision of Matt at House of Yoga, Redfern. Their anti-gravity yoga studio ensured the safety of the subjects through proper instruction and equipment, so my public liability was in no danger of straining a muscle.

The producers were a huge help in pulling the shoot together, and I'm grateful for the efforts of the crew, Sandra (asst), Hilary Ho (MUA) and stylist Susannah Best, the guys at House of Yoga and the subjects who tried their best to look composed."

The photographer whom I assisted for in the mid '90's was a strong mentoring influence, and he would tell me that if you are to become a proper photographer, then that's all you should be interested in. Absolute commitment. No dabbling in music, sports or any other pointless hobbies. Eat, sleep, drink The Medium of Photography. 24/7.

It seems extreme, but it rings true. In my career I have noticed that distractions can detract from this path we have chosen to tread, The counter argument is that great work on a subject happens when the photographer has an interest in that subject. Examples abound.

It has to be a character trait of the profession to be interested in many things, and by virtue, remain interesting, but I'm just justifying that I have another interest in my life… Its no secret I'm fond of the old pushie and I have been taking a camera along on the mountain bike. I pressure myself to do justice to the atmosphere of being out on the fresh trail in the early morning, rather than attempt to emulate the brilliant action work that has been produced by those that specialize in this sort of stuff. For me its not just a bit of weekend fun, but an amalgamation of my passions.

Martin Mischkulnig in Zurich

Earlier this year I posted a story about a shoot Martin did for the Swiss financial magazine Bilanz about Zurich West, a new upcoming area of Zurich, where industry meets chic inner city, a mixture of drab office blocks, bold new architecture, shopping, nightclubs, factories and freeways. Martin took the opportunity to shoot a personal project. For him it was an experiment in modern street documentary.

The Top of Europe by Martin Mischkulnig

Here is a recent project by Martin Mischkulnig about Jungfraujoch - Top of Europe, one of the most popular tourist destinations in Switzerland and all of Europe.

A couple of these were published for an article about the top ten best things to do in Switzerland but Martin shot a whole lot more as a personal project.

Jungfraujoch boasts Europes highest railway station 3454m , the highest Indian restaurant (Bollywood), and ATM machine.

It attracts Tourists and climbers alike and while Martin was there a climber needed rescuing after falling from the peak and breaking his back.
